TIAA-CREF Donates 337 Computers to United Way and Partner Agencies in Charlotte Region

Beneficiaries Include Communities In Schools, Goodwill, Salvation Army, Urban League; 490 More Computers Donated in New York, Dallas, Denver

Charlotte, N.C., June 29, 2010

TIAA-CREF, a long-time supporter of United Way and its partner agencies, is donating 827 computers to education and health and human services nonprofits around the nation, including 337 here in Charlotte.

TIAA-CREF worked with United Way to determine which local agencies were most in need of replacements for aging computers, and also selected agencies aligned with TIAA-CREF’s educational roots and nonprofit philosophy.

“Communities In Schools is thrilled to receive this generous donation of computers from TIAA-CREF,” said Bill Anderson, executive director of Communities In Schools. “It represents a significant savings for our technology budget and will help us provide our staff with the tools they need to do their job. And it’s a gift we can put to use right away.”

Established in 1918 with a $1 million grant from Andrew Carnegie to provide life insurance for teachers, TIAA-CREF has a long record of giving back to individuals and communities where the organization operates. Its United Way partnership goes back as far as 1938, when TIAA’s 65 employees helped launch The Greater New York Fund – today known as United Way of New York City.
